Apparently part of the transition involved implanting a backbone.

And I love it. It’s fine to be nice all the time but you don’t have to be a pushover 100% of the time.9

Haha, so the last panel had the word balloon pointing to the wrong person and that totally changes the tone of this conversation.

    Fixed.

Knew it :). This is good for Zhusen standing up for herself…and good for Theron to pick up on a social cue he definitely either missed or outright avoided. I don’t think he was being genuinely mean spirited, but letting her say what she needed to would’ve been plenty

On the one hand, cool, Zhusen is sticking up for herself. On the other hand, I can totally see where Theron is coming from. Many people play these games as an escape from real world issues and would rather not bring them into it.

Question ’cause generally curious at this point

How on earth was Zhu supposed to let Theron know that her means of address was changing and that people in chat would be calling her she now?

Because like there is avoiding ‘real world issues’ and there is avoiding basic things you need to know about people to function in chat during a raid.

        Based on the avatar?

My WoW main is a female mage. I’ve been “she/her” in chat n’ such for years, despite the fact that my guildies all know “she” is played by a middle-aged beardo.

Eh. Mountains. Molehills. Zhusen doesn’t have to make potions for everyone but they’re definitely making a statement. its one that just stinks of ‘meh’. if someone wants to leave you out of something like that then let them. It’s not going to effect your game in the long run so no skin off your nose, right?

Theron isn’t really in the wrong for how they behaved either. “don’t talk religion or politics” is a good rule to live by, people will have strong opinions about them and it’s going to cause drama. Although it would have been better to just start with an ‘ok’ and move on then give that speech if Zhusen continued to make an issue out of it. The issue seems to be that he doesn’t want to be get deeply involved in Zhusen’s personal life, which is fair enough, a bit cold maybe but he doesn’t owe Zhusen that level of interest.

Right there. See, she makes flasks for FRIENDS. Friends don’t do that.

Then he could have just said “Oh? Okay, that’s no big deal.” It’s neutral while acknowledging that the change exists and notes that he doesn’t consider it a problem.

Or you know, he has the right to respond in the way he did and not be vilified because he didn’t make someone “feel good” with his response.

It’s like people are assuming there’s only one way to say things, and it’s usually the response that they like to hear. Honestly, vilifying Theron’s stance is the reason why so many people nowadays are afraid to step out of line and be honest. If Theron’s honesty is seriously seen as some sort of social stigma, then I’d understand why the world we’re living in today is such a mess.

And the other person has the right to stop doing something they were voluntarily doing, not required by the guild, as a result of it.

The consequence of not making other people feel good is that they stop being willing to go out of their way for you, that’s all.

Theron’s going to learn a lesson about “ignoring issues” and not listening to your friends.

what i think is important for readers to realize is this is a SIDE effect that has little to do with Zhusen’s actions.

This entire situation could have come from her asking him for some friendly advice on like…idk if she should call the place she applied to see if there were any opening or risk alienating the HR representative and him saying he doenst want to talk about real life stuff but if she wants to know how to increase her dps he can help. And realizing that they arent friends like she thought decides to stop making the EXTRA effort (which we ALL do realize that it IS an effort to waste your time and resources so your friends dont have to right?)

Thats actually a great sign of this being good “representation”. Is the fact that the “Conflict” is coming from Zhu realizing one of her guildies see her like a friend. and issue that happens with in person relationships often

I don’t think Zhu asking for advice on a job is the same as her letting folks know about her transition at all. One is asking Theron’s opinion on a practical, RL thing with a negligible connection to the game and the other is letting him know about a fundamental part of her identity that, if he doesn’t get straight, will cause confusion during raids – which frankly is beside the point because cutting someone off like Theron did to Zhu is disrespectful. And if Theron only cares about game-connected things, disrespecting your team-mate is game-related.

I’m sure this will open up a conversation about their respective limits when it comes to guild social connections and conventions, but the comparison to asking career advice isn’t appropriate. (With that said, it looks like Theron might agree with that comparison and Zhu probably wouldn’t.)

You knew this was coming Mr. Ranger! Indifference doesn’t mean there isn’t real consequence. Am feeling at least one panel where Theron lets something from his real life slip through, if only for the flasks. Who farms those anymore…amirite?

I also expect some Theron RL facts to slip through at some point – my take on this storyline so far is that it will develop both him and Zhusen as characters through these interactions they’re having with each other. We’ve learned about Zhusen, and now she’s learning to make a stand for herself, which is good for her. Hopefully the same will hold true for Theron.

Cool. Theron has always thought Zhu gives flasks because Zhu is being a nice person and that she gives to everyone. If next week is continuing the topic, I’m curious as to whether Theron will say “fair enough” or he will see Zhu as an actual friend.

I think Zhusen regarded Theron as a friend, since the time they did that treasure chest quest with him and Lys. From Zhu’s perspective, she would never consider grouping up with guildies to be solely a means to an end, instead of a fun activity choice. It’d be a foreign concept to her. So whether Theron meant it as a rejection or not, it’s easy to see how she might take it that way.

Looking forward to seeing how they work it out.

Theron really doesn’t deserve this nonsense. This isn’t Zhu with a backbone this is Zhu being pitifully spiteful. Theron clearly said he has no problem with it but doesn’t want it to impact his Hobby, and why should it? Why should he have to be all cheers and break character of who he’s set up to of been just to appease this?

Idiocy. Let the man enjoy his game.

Zhu just realizes he wasn’t as much of a friend as she thought he was – she used to consider him a friend but since he doesn’t want to mix RL stuff and his hobby, she realizes they have two different definitions of friendship and acts accordingly.

“Let the man enjoy his game” – why the heck should she keep providing free flasks if she doesn’t consider him as much of a friend as before?

Yeah, I’d say it’s not necessarily a case of spite. Zhusen’s clearly not obligated to send flasks to any guild members: she hadn’t been sending them to Murd and had been to Theron, based on her sense of her relationship with them. Her perception changed based on their responses to her news and so did her choice of where to send the flasks.

Maybe Theron will find he enjoys the flask-farming part of the game?

Depends on how you define friend.

Zhu’s definition probably includes someone who is at least mildly interested in them as a person.

Theron’s definition of friend is probably closer to, someone I don’t want to fill with arrows.

Zhu doesn’t have any obligation to send anyone anything. The fact that she does is awesome and cool but the second that she is demoted in the eyes of Theron to a flask acquisition weekly quest who grew a personality, he lost all right to her gifts. And here is the thing.

    He can still get flasks.

He can buy flasks like everyone else does and he will be fine. He is coming across as so entitled it’s ridiculous. If he thinks that he should be fine with playing an mmorpg without adhering to the social constructs of not being rude to someone who is obviously in a lot of stress, he should probably be switching to a single player game.
