The Continuing Wars Between Guilds

So I’m a little deeper in Guild Wars 2. I leveled a bit, played more of my “Personal Story”, and tried to save a princess with a stick.

You get 10 action bar slots. That’s it. The five on the left are from your weapon, the sixth is your healing ability, 7-8-9 are your normal skills, the 10th (which I don’t have yet) is an “Elite” ability you unlock at level 30. Each class has something tied to the first few function keys, for a ranger it’s pet commands. So essentially there are 3 slots you play around with (7-8-9). There are a lot more than 3 skills that you can assign to these slots, so you’re going to pick the ones you like, and use those, maybe switching them around situationally (I haven’t really had a reason to yet, though). So you may play with very different skills than others in your class. On the flip side, after you unlock the skills you like, there seems to be very little reason to unlock others. I’ve got a bleed, a constant speed boost, and a plant turret. I can get a passive that removes conditions once every ten seconds? Who cares? PLANT TURRET.

I guess it's no more weird than humans wearing leather.

I’m actually 10 levels too low for it yet, but the game gives you transmute tokens for exploration, and you can use those to give your armor the appearance of cooler armor, even of a higher level than you can wear. This is cool, if kind of demotivating. I am already as cool-looking as I could ever want to be. I may very well hit max level and make whatever gear I’m wearing then look like what I’m wearing now.

Guild Wars 2 wins!

Welp. Wow had a hefty early lead, but it was overtaken by Guild Wars 2. Also my sister bought it for me. That tips things considerably. I’ll get around to most of the other games on the list eventually. I’ll also be posting impressions here as I play.

I AM GROOT!

I AM GROOT!

The races in GW2 are pretty odd. Demonic dog people (Charr), bigger humans (Norn), E.T. with floppy ears (Asura), plant people (Sylvari), and humans (Duh). I made a plant man ranger.

Looking For Game

by Robin Brooks on August 28, 2013 at 11:29 am

First off, there will be no comics Friday or Monday, as I will be attending Dragon*Con over the holiday weekend. Normal updates will resume Wednesday the 4th.

Now. It’s been a few months since I last shook off WoW, and that MMO itch is creeping back up on me. Soon, I will be questing again. But the question is, which MMO?

  • World of Warcraft is always there. I’ve got all the expansions. A few max level characters. Some near max level. But for once, I have no friends in the game. For once it does not have the advantage of being the game I can play with people I know.
  • Star Wars: The Old Republic is another game that I really enjoyed. BioWare storytelling + WoW gameplay + Star Wars setting is something I’m pretty sure I asked a genie for at some point. It’s free-to-play now, but the free-to-play restrictions make playing without a subscription really feel like being a second class player. Which I could accept if I could play as a Jawa or Ugnaught.
  • Neverwinter could be nice. Content creation sounds pretty boss. It’s new, it’s free. It has playable drow though, so I’ll be wading in a sea of scimitar wielding rangers.
  • Rift I know this game has big elemental invasions, but that’s about the extent of my knowledge. I have a disk copy of it they gave away at PAX East last year, and have been a little curious.
  • Tera I hear Tera’s combat is pretty great. That is almost all I have heard about it.
  • Guild Wars 2 is often billed by its fans as the savior of the MMO player from subscriptions and crappy F2P microtransactions. However, I don’t own it, so I would need to drop the $60 to pick it up.
  • Star Trek Online lets me be a starship captain. It’s free, and I get to be captain of a starship.
  • Have any other suggestions? Throw ’em in the comments!

I’ve put up a poll over to the right. Throw it a vote, and feel free to elaborate on why your game rules and other games drool in the comments.
