Best pre-nerf Grim Batol run I had outside of my guild was with a bunch of Brazilian players. Only one of them spoke English, but they took the time to explain to me what they needed me to do.
“Yes, No, Stop, Go.” The four words I use when I don’t speak the language of the group. Pointing at things helps.
But it is mostly reading the flow and understanding what I am to be doing, what needs to be done, and adapting to their flow to make sure it doesn’t hit the fan. Some trust in that they know what they are doing lowers the sanity check of the encounter when they break the CC again.
Love it (sarcasm) when one can’t or refuses to talk English and have to wait for another to translate. And also types in another language expecting us to understand. I’m not against others like this except in raids. I don’t need (insert voice program here) wondering why we booted them. Raids are different than dungeons as I to have found myself in such a position but I drop group unless I know the fight real well as we generally don’t talk anyways.
Back when I played Final Fantasy 11, this wasn’t as much of an issue due to the limited translate function(I believe the term “bio” for a bathroom break gained popularity there, since Bio was a term the system could translate, being a spell name). WoW doing that..would require a complete chat system overhaul though
Ah yes, I’m the guy who knows Spansh and English so when someone from Quel’thalas joins in and doesn’t speak [A sign they don’t know english] I make an effort to trnslate to my fellow South-american dumb dumbs.
A few weeks ago I found someone from QT who did speak english in a mythic dungeon run and when we were waiting for he rest of the group to arrive I dropped some spanish jokes. Once te fellas arrived I tol him “okay, we better speak english to respect the guys who don’t speak our language” And the guy got Pisssed off. “Why should I spea englsh if they don’t respect MY language” and as I tried to explain to hi that while all 5 members of the group speak english only the two of us knew spanish and the guy ust up and leaves.
Sometimes being too proud of your language is bad. but you americans wouldn’t know aaaaanything about refusing to learn or speak another language eh?
There is sufficient English-language content to keep us entertained indefinitely. What is there that I’m missing, that I would WANT, by not speaking other languages?
The “Auto-translate” functionality in the chat is a godsend. Yeah, it isn’t detailed enough for me to tell someone what I want to do to his dog, his mother, and his family if I’ve just been ganked in a battle ground, but it more than meets my needs if I need to explain the mechanics of a fight or otherwise relate what I need the party to do in general.
Ah – those groups with the one guy who speaks only English and the four people who speak only Portuguese. Those are always fun!
The best part is when they use a foreign language you actually know. You wait for the right moment and then scare the shit out of them.

Whenever you need a truly alien language you can’t go wrong with the Portuguese?

For those not in the know, Keran is speaking Star Trek.
No, she’s speaking Tamarian. Which is from Star Trek, specifically the episode Darmok.
There’s been more than one reference to that episode in this comic.
Shaka, when the walls fell!
Temba, his eyes uncovered!
Gilgamesh and Enkidu at Uruk.

In FFXI I frequently saw “wc” for bathroom break from Japanese players (abbreviation for water closet).

See, this attitude is why you’re so lonely all the time.
Frankly, why would we bother?

This is why I love FF14.

You and me both. Their auto translate allows for basic greetings and instance instructions, though I’ve also learned to keep a translator app handy. 😉
For some reason, my pre-caffeine brain misread the second sentence and missed the “what” and the third “to”.
Can I get brain bleach please?
Jalad, with arms open!
GW2 has a language preference button on the group finder.
See, her mistake was not doing Klingon
