Ugh, always hated this joke, but that’s a personal thing. She does need to learn that raiding is different than normal instances…and is thankfully with a group willing to teach and work through the learning curve rather than demand instant perfection(something I’ve gotten very tired of dealing with in MMOs, WoW especially…I can tank or heal and have, just never get the chance to practice and improve because everyone wants me at a much higher skill level right away, so those alts collect dust since they aren’t fun to play anymore)
And proud of it. Been raiding current content since BC while never using my mouse for movement. I find it too disorienting, hence my distaste for the joke.
I’ve been doing the same thing. On very rare occasions, I use the mouse to move. I tank and heal current content (11/13M at the moment) as a keyboard turner.
Yeah, keyboard moving can be done for most things (I use a mouse, usually, but it can be done well.) The real issues are with accurate small adjustment, not with a stupidly slow turn rate.
Always reminds me of those people who say ‘You can’t heal without X or Y addon.’ *I usually have a healer in my cabal of characters, and never use addons for healing.* This statement usually comes right before, nine times out of ten, they post a stupidly low amount of healing on a run.
I tend to find jokes on these topics overdone, and usually not so true unless the person behind the action is at fault. I don’t think of Keran as being that stupid, so this joke really falls flat here for me.
Okay, this has unexpectedly hit on a sore spot of the community. It’s a dumb joke about using keys to turn being slower than using the mouse. It’s exaggerated, with intent of comedic effect, but it apparently only succeeded in ruffling some feathers. Sorry about that.
No apology necessary, yeah it rustled a few feathers, but I did like the portrayal of Lys being willing to teach rather than the sadly common reaction to a relative newbie being “l2play n00b”.
It sort of hit a sore spot…I started playing having only a laptop and no mouse, so I used the touchpad for everything. When that fact came out over vent from a friend in the group after a successful Kara run, the sheer shock that someone playing with “that” could be on the top end of the group’s numbers with least deaths left a bad taste in my mouth about the widespread opinion of equipment trumping skill, despite the evidence to the contrary. Both for in game and for what you’re playing on, come to think about it. I’m sorry I brought it up
Yeah, it ruffles… because too many people use the idea as an insult, and because it isn’t a good basis for judging a person’s competence. Not that we don’t get the joke, and it’s certainly not you. It’s more baggage from those who have done similar jokes, or used this as an ‘I’m better than you!’ statement toward others in a group that makes this a sore topic.
I’ve played with people who didn’t use a mouse, and did great. In fact, I play regularly with one who can’t use a mouse with the keyboard due to a disability. Which makes this much less funny to me, although some others may still appreciate it.
So yeah, not you, and not really upset… just something that I would like to note isn’t generally the real issue.
Keyboard turner here, and have been tanking since BC in WoW and just started FFXIV. keyboard isn’t slow at all, and for me, it’s much faster to hit the keys that are right under my fingers anyway — y’know, since you have to use your keyboard for all your other actions — than it is to have to take my hand off keys and move to mouse and waste a precious second or two getting mouse pointed correctly to move.
Not all of us have money to burn on fancy gaming mouses. Quite a few of us are stuck with regular standard things. Some of us even use –gasp — Macs, whose mouses don’t have all the extra buttons (no comments from the Anti-Mac Trolls; I’ve run Macs since the ’80s, and they’re just fine for gaming.)
Sorry, Robin — I should’ve been more clear. Muddled on pain meds. I never could see how mouse turning could be faster than key turning; the friends I have who advocate mouse-turn use those special mouses, so I assumed the speed had something to do with all the keybind buttons and mouse being in one place under the same hand.
Like the others have said, no need to apologize; I get the joke and like that Lys is teaching rather than tossing out the usual “L2P N00B” insults. It just gets wearying when that one point always gets harped on. It’s like the people tossing that insult out don’t have any real advice or suggestions, so they focus on the fast easy insult that makes them feel superior, rather than take the time to…y’know…be nice and communicate to another human.
While turning with a mouse is faster it’s not (usually) necessary in PvE content.
I use it because of the camera control it gives me. I can look around to get a better view of what is coming in and people’s positions, which is kinda important when I tank. 🙂
I use a regular PC mouse with two buttons and a scroll wheel, no fancy gaming mouse necessary.
What a gaming mouse can do is give you action buttons for your abilities on the mouse itself, freeing up some keybonds on the keyboard. Doesn’t affect turn speed compared to a regular mouse.
Butt hurt keyboard turners fear not. As I’m sure most of you know that while it is a huge deal in PvP it is irrelevant in PvE like this comic, and anyone who says otherwise is a toxic loser who doesn’t know what they are talking about.
It was just used in the comic as a quick gag that most MMO players would understand and is not trying to directly target you. It is the equivalent of getting upset when people make a “hunters need on everything!” joke because you play hunter.
I know, which is why I apologized for bringing it up in the first place. As should be apparent, I’m mainly a PvE player(save in ESO…oddly enough I don’t mind he PvP in that particular game). I play a rogue in WoW, so I know all about the ignorant assumptions people make before getting to know how and how well a person plays. It took me ages to find a group to raid with in BC because everyone assumed because of my class, I was PvP and useless in PvE stuff outside of picking locks to skip stuff.
That said, it is nice to know there are still people out there that do know the truth 🙂
Keyboard turning in WoW in PVE isn’t a big deal, but keyboard turning in more modern MMOs like GW2 would spell a death sentence. Defense in that game is proactive, not passive.
The problem isnt the comic, but the community. There are hundreds of players that are elitist pricks who act like the game is being ruined by “casuals”(yet another machismo way of routing out “real” men), “dumb” players, this and that , that and this.
Basically one of the many jokes that isnt funny anymore because people use it to bash innocent skulls in
The raiding version of the Talk.

Keyboard turner spotted.

Thanks for following up with us on this!
I really like the Lys’s reaction here.

I’m not sure I follow this one. What about turning with a mouse needs a gaming mouse? It just takes a right-click button?
Sorry, Robin — I should’ve been more clear. Muddled on pain meds. If not thousands.
