I’m not sure if this comic was written 5-10 yrs ago and you’ve only gotten round to posting it. For a while I’ve been reading this like its a nostalgia piece. There are some MMO’s that are still like the tropes here (WoW) but many are breaking down the barriers of those hard and fast rules (tropes).

I don’t know that I would say “many”. Some games are, but for a good 8-9 years now, it’s been all about the WoW clones in the MMO world. Hell, even WoW has changed a lot of things over the years. I guess it could be a “nostalgia piece” in that it’s reflective of my experiences in MMOs, but those experiences haven’t changed much. Most every MMO I’ve played could be described as “it’s WoW with ___________ (actiony combat, some more tabletop elements, a different licensed property, dialogue wheels, and so on)”.

Even newer games like Tera are like this in a lot of ways. Stupid people, trolls, that one badly balanced quest, class roles, and guild drama are universal.

I definitely read this as a nostalgia piece. Then again, I don’t play “current” MMOs. I did play WOW last year this time (beta->pandas) and I still felt a lot of what this comic has is too true. For what it’s worth.
